PURPOSE
The purposes of scientific investigation and discovery are to satisfy humankind’s quest for knowledge and understanding and to preserve and enhance the quality of the human experience. Therefore, as a result of science instruction, students will be able to achieve the following objectives:
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
1. Come on time and prepared to work.
2. Participate in everything.
3. Do your work and turn it in.
4. Respect everyone.
5. Follow all school rules in code of conduct.
SPECIFIC RULES
A. Be here on time and ready to go the minute the bell rings. Don’t waste time.
B. Keep talking to a bare minimum. Allow others to speak when they have the floor. Be polite and respectful of others when they are speaking.
C. Bathrooms: THE BEST POLICY is to go to the bathroom in between classes; that way, no one misses any instruction. In any case, NO ONE is allowed to go during the 1st 10 minutes of class or the last 10 minutes of class. There will be a sign-in sheet for you to record the time you come in and come back, so that we can account for you at all times.
D. While we now have Chromebooks at our disposal, keep in mind that we will not use them all the time. When we are not using them, I may ask you to shut them or put them at a 45 degree angle. They will only be used for classroom purposes only; there is no “free time”.
SUPPLIES
These are needed at all times and in all classes:
1. Binder with section/folder for assignments and handouts
2. composition book for journals
3. loose-leaf paper
4. pens (blue/black ink only)
5. pencils
6. Chromebook
7. Highlighters (any color is acceptable)
8. Colored pencils/markers
While some provision may be made for those who need it, please refer to Specific Expectation #1 in regards to your supplies. While I don’t mind loaning things out every once in a while, it is still your responsibility to make sure you are prepared.
CONSEQUENCES FOR BEHAVIOR
Students who follow expectations may receive the following:
1. Additional privileges and rewards within the classroom.
2. Homework-free passes (not for all assignments)
3. Good phone calls.
4. Good grades.
Students who cannot follow expectations may receive the following:
1. Verbal Warning.
2. Teacher Choice of consequence/ phone call to parents
3. Detention (before, during, or after school)/phone call to parents
4. Referral to administrator
5. Overtime: if the class or a large number of students are being disrespectful to staff and class, causing a loss of instructional time, the amount of time lost may be deducted from other activities and/or dismissal from class. While I will not deliberately cause you to be tardy to your next class, it will limit your time in between classes.
DAILY SCHEDULE (subject to change):
1. Bellringer: 2-3 questions reviewing material previously learned (1st 5 min.)
2. Class review of previous material
3. Introduction of new material
4. Interactive activities/labs
5. Review/Homework assignment
6. Exit Ticket: quick 1-2 question quiz before the bell to ensure learning. (Last 5 min.)
GRADING
Tests/Projects/Labs 35%
All graded assignments will be out of a possible 100 points.
Incomplete assignments will be graded as NTI, with an average of 0% for the assignment. Grades marked NTI can be changed if assignment is made up within a week. Late work will receive a 10% reduction for each day missing.
Grades marked as Exc. are excused; this will not affect your grade.
AVERAGE
100- 90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
59-0 F
PROJECTS
In addition to benchmark tests given every 4.5 weeks, there will be other major assignments each quarter, which include the following:
HOMEWORK
All classes and students will have homework every week (no exceptions). The good news is there will only be one homework assignment per week, and you will have the entire week to complete it. If it is a paper copy, there will be a file basket to deposit your homework; do not just put it on my desk as it may get lost. If it is an electronic copy (on computer), it will be deposited in Google Classroom.
All homework assignments, paper and electronic, will be due by the end of the day on that Friday the week it was assigned. Any homework assignment turned in after Friday (time stamped after 2:30 pm Friday) will receive a 10 point deduction for every day it is late. No late assignments will be accepted after 5 days.
If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for helping make this school year a successful one and I look forward to working with you.

- Develop and use an experimental design in scientific inquiry.
- Use the language of science to communicate understanding.
- Investigate phenomena using technology.
- Apply scientific concepts, skills, and processes to everyday experiences.
- Experience the richness and excitement of scientific discovery of the natural world.

GRADING
Tests/Projects/Labs 35%
- Tests will be given at the end of each unit; usually each test has up to 50 questions. In order to help off-set test grades, there will be projects and labs assigned. See below concerning labs and projects.
- Quizzes will usually be short, about 10-15 questions maximum. These may also include Exit Tickets.
- Homework will be given out only once per week. If it is assigned at the beginning of the week, then it will be due by 2:30 Fridays.
- This includes bellringers. Bellringers are due on Fridays. All other classwork assignments are due the day they are assigned, unless otherwise noted.
All graded assignments will be out of a possible 100 points.
Incomplete assignments will be graded as NTI, with an average of 0% for the assignment. Grades marked NTI can be changed if assignment is made up within a week. Late work will receive a 10% reduction for each day missing.

PROJECTS
In addition to benchmark tests given every 4.5 weeks, there will be other major assignments each quarter, which include the following:
- Labs: as much as possible, we will try to incorporate more hands-on activities and explorations every other week. Each lab will include specific directions that must be followed. Data and follow-up questions will need to be completed in order to get full credit.
- Notebooks: once or twice a quarter, notebook checks will be made to make sure all students are keeping track of work. Work done on Chromebook must be kept on Google Drive; written work/ paper work need to be collected in a science notebook (having a section within a large binder designated for science will do). Students can turn in both written and electronic work.
- Projects: a different project will be completed every quarter, which will vary in scope and type. Complete instructions and a rubric will be given prior to each project assignment.
